Have you heard of the Tata Nano? Maybe not
because it isn't available in North America but let me sum it up
for you. It's the automotive equivalent of cat poop. Hell, it
might even give cat poop a bad name. I get more nauseous looking
at the Nano than the cat poop.
Still curious? The reason the Nano even exists is the fact that
it's the cheapest car in the world primarily marketed in India
where it's made. It costs about $2,500 in India but will be
around $8,000 when it hits Europe. If it were to hit the United
States, it would probably be over $8,000 to meet U.S. safety and
emissions standards. If it ever does, God help us all.
If it did somehow pass all the U.S. safety and emissions
regulations, the cost of modifications needed to pass those
tests makes the Nano pointless. Who is going to pay $8,000 for a
cat poop car when there's millions of perfectly good used cars
that not only won't get you killed in the event of an accident,
but also come with, you know, features (see interior below). Not
only that, an $8,000 price tag isn't that much lower than other
new affordable cars such as the Hyundai Accent, Nissan Versa,
etc which come in around ten grand. And those actually have air
bags (something that Nano does not. At least not yet anyways.)
If the Nano did make it to America, my biggest fear would be an
increase in automotive fatalities. All joking aside, putting
something as unstable and unsafe as the Nano on American roads
filled with huge SUVs, trucks, and bad drivers would be a
catastrophe waiting to happen.
Don't get me wrong. The problem with the Nano isn't necessarily
its size either. I have no problems with small cars. If
anything, I prefer them for their maneuverability and better
mileage. The problem is that the Nano wasn't designed with
safety as its first priority. Keep in mind that it would need to
be modified to be safe. Something about that seems wrong.
I think the things in the trash can pictured
have a higher value than the Nano's interior. Whereas most car
companies list off how many features its vehicles come with, you
can list off more features that the Nano does not
come with. We're not talking about simple luxuries like power
windows and locks, Bluetooth, GPS, etc. We're talking about
necessities like air bags and anti-lock brakes. To get features
that are included on nearly every vehicle sold in the U.S. like
air conditioning, a radio, and even power steering, you'll have
to pay extra.
