|
| BMW has just officially revealed
the new 2011 BMW 5 Series. Oddly enough, it looks strangely
familiar. Oh that's right, it's pretty much a smaller 7 Series.
Well, it almost is a smaller 7 Series as they both
share the same platform and other components, although slightly
revised for the 5 Series. I hate when automakers do this. They
get lazy and just copy their own design rather than offering
something fresh and innovating. It's not that the new 5
Series doesn't look good. It's the fact that it doesn't look,
well, new. |

 |
| Spotting the differences is harder
than reading a Where's Waldo? book. The front designs
vary slightly with the 5 Series having a shorter front end and
grille. The hood throws in some extra lines and the bottom grill
varies but just barely. The headlights take identical shapes but
slightly different proportions. |

|
 |
|
 |
| Differentiation is harder to see as
you go around the car. It's like trying to play Pictureka!. |
 |
|
 |
| The 5 Series is obviously shorter
but it's hard to see any other differences in the side profile.
Of course the wheels are different but they're even different
when you pick different trims of the same car. |

 |
| Okay, I'm starting to see something
now... nope I lost it. They didn't even bother changing the tail
lights that much. They keep similar designs and shapes. Even the
reflector lights are in the same position on both cars. So what
did I find though? Three differences on the 5 Series. The
creased trunk lid, no chrome bar, and different exhaust pipes. |

|
 |
| Really? Even the interior? Well, I
guess that's not as bad as the exteriors looking identical. |

| NOTES |
BMW has a long wheelbase 7 Series already, the 750Li.
Considering the new 5 Series rides on a shortened 7 Series platform, why
didn't they just call this the 750Si?
(I know, I know, it's what's underneath that counts.)
I think new 7 Series owners should feel cheated though. They could've paid
$40,000 less to get a similar car. |
