Land Rover's Range Rover has long been known as one of the ultimate SUVs. Its a true SUV with real off-road capability and luxury that rivals BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz. One of the Range Rover's closest competitors is the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class which is the reigning segment leader. (Sure the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is available too but that's only for the ridiculously rich with more money than common sense)
2010 Land Rover Range Rover vs 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
For 2010, both the Range Rover and GL get a mild freshening. The Range Rover gets new LED head/tail lights and bumpers, the GL gets new fog lamps, and both get a revised grille .
The Range Rover's design isn't that much different than the original 1970 Range Rover. Obviously it's more modern today but the squared-off styling still remains. Everything is bold, strong, and muscular. The GL forgoes the boxy design with a look that's similar to other Mercedes SUVs (not including the G-Class) and actually has a unibody architecture based on the M-Class. The GL doesn't have the Range Rover's long history and was only recently introduced in 2006 but since its introduction, its been well accepted as a capable SUV.
The Range Rover's boxy shape continues from front to back. The blacked-out pillars and tinted windows creates a wraparound look with an angled rear window. The GL's rear stays flat which makes the GL look even longer than it already is (five inches more than the Range Rover).
My oh my have things changed. The original Range Rover was never intended to be a world class luxury SUV. The original interior was hardly luxurious and was designed to be washed down with a hose (Wikipedia). Take a look now and any luxury car owner would feel right at home behind the wheel. The design, like the exterior, is masculine with strong and sharp lines with luxurious features all around. The instrument cluster is now a 12" Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) screen like a LCD television rather than traditional analog gauges like the GL. The GL's interior gets mildly updated with a new instrument panel, steering wheel, ambient lighting, and more but it's not as technologically advanced as the Range Rover, yet.
